Serving the Lord

August 26, 2012 | Author: | Posted in Holy Bible Readings, S, Sunday Masses

Here are the Holy Bible passages about serving the Lord from the First Reading of the 21st Sunday in Ordinary Time (August 26, 2012):

but as for me and my house, we will serve the LORD.

Joshua 24:1-2 and 15-18
1 Then Joshua gathered all the tribes of Israel to Shechem, and summoned the elders,
the heads, the judges, and the officers of Israel; and they presented themselves
   before God.
2 And Joshua said to all the people, “Thus says the LORD, the God of Israel,
`Your fathers lived of old beyond the Euphra’tes, Terah, the father of Abraham and of
Nahor; and they served other gods.
15 And if you be unwilling to serve the LORD, choose this day whom you will serve,
whether the gods your fathers served in the region beyond the River, or the gods of
the Amorites in    whose land you dwell; but as for me and my
house, we will serve the LORD.”
16 Then the people answered, “Far be it from us that we should forsake the LORD,
   to serve other gods;
17 for it is the LORD our God who brought us and our fathers up from the land of Egypt,
out of the house of bondage, and who did those great signs in our sight,
and preserved us in all the way that we went, and among all the peoples
   through whom we passed;
18 and the LORD drove out before us all the peoples, the Amorites who lived in the
land; therefore we also will serve the LORD, for he is our God.”

Joshua 24: 1 – 2, 15 – 18
[1] And Josue gathered together all the tribes of Israel in Sichem, and called for the
ancients, and the princes, and the judges, and the masters: and they
stood in the sight of the Lord:
[2] And he spoke thus to the people: Thus saith the Lord the God of Israel: Your
fathers dwelt of old on the other side of the river, Thare the father of Abraham,
and Nachor: and they served strange gods.
[15] But if it seem evil to you to serve the Lord, you have your choice: choose this day
that which pleaseth you, whom you would rather serve, whether the gods
which your fathers served in Mesopotamia, or the gods of the Amorrhites,
in whose land you dwell: but as for me and my house we will serve
   the Lord.
[16] And the people answered, and said: God forbid we should leave the Lord, and
   serve strange gods.
[17] The Lord our God he brought us and our fathers out of the land of Egypt, out of
the house of bondage: and did very great signs in our sight, and preserved
us in all the way by which we journeyed, and among all the people
   through whom we passed.
[18] And he hath cast out all the nations, the Amorrhite the inhabitant of the land into
which we are come. Therefore we will serve the Lord, for he is our God.

One in Mind and Heart

O God, who cause the minds of the faithful
to unite in a single purpose,
grant your people to love what you command
and to desire what you promise,
that, amid the uncertainties of this world,
our hearts may be fixed on that place
where true gladness is found.
